Why People Turn To Depression Counselling

By David Carter

Depression is a very common illness, which can become crippling when the condition is more serious. Sometimes there is no reason why this develops and psychologist can't explain why this happens. In other cases, there are a number of reasons why this happens and one needs to look into depression counselling which will help the individual deal with the issue at hand.

People struggle with all sorts of things in this day and age. It can be something minor such as stress in the work place which keeps on building up. However, it can become more serious for people who have suffered a loss or for someone who has lost their job. The trauma which goes back to childhood also plays a part on the illness.

One often does not know in which direction to turn when you are in a crisis. You may feel trapped when you in a relationship. This especially applies when it has become abusive. You are often sworn to secrecy. At a time like when someone is exposed to violence, they will become seriously depressed as they become more and more isolated and withdrawn in the process.

Many people with depression will become angry. This particularly relates to someone with underlying issues. Those who have past trauma in their lives relating to childhood abuse, for example will become depressed later on in life. They may not be aware of this. However, one needs to attend to the root of the problem.

One also needs to work with the underlying issue which may be causing the depression, otherwise you will be back to square one. This could be something like alcoholism, trauma or a problem in your marriage. However, there are times when people become depressed for no reason. This can be due to a chemical imbalance.

Groups can be effective for people who are going through a period of grief. They are able to find comfort and a sense of compassion by listening to others. They will then find the courage to share their story. It will also force them to start to socialize more and develop friendships in some cases. People also start to identify with each other, and this is something that does not happen during the one on one process.

The creative process is also a great way of healing your inner trauma. It is particularly helpful for someone who has a lot of anger that they are bottling up. When this has been festering inside, a person will become depressed, and they need to deal with it by expressing themselves in a verbal or non-verbal way. Both of these methods can be helpful.

Families and friends should encourage their loved ones to invest in the process of therapy. They may not realize that there is something wrong. Sometimes they may simply think that they are sad, and are lacking sleep. However, it is important to take note of the signs and symptoms, especially when this is ongoing. Support and encouragement is vital at this time.
