The Human Trafficking Expert Report

By Jocelyn Davidson

It is a common misconception that trafficking of humans is an issue of the past century or countries far away. However, there is evidence that this modern day slavery is still rampant. The sad state of trafficked people is that they are held not only by physical chains but also emotional and psychological as well. Human trafficking expert say that trafficking of people is a $32 billion industry exploiting both adults and children.

Human trafficking is recognized internationally as the second most rampant international crime after illegal drugs and arms. This crime is not border specific, it can happen within the confines of a single city. Selling of people in the current times is barbarous and a major violation of rights of people. It leads to mental sicknesses, drug abuse and increases the chances of involvement in major crimes. Moreover, female victims of sexual exploitation have high rates of HIV and other STDS and their reproductive organs may suffer permanent damage.

Economic and social reasons guide the choice of the target group. It is easy to target individuals from dysfunctional families or those with social and psychological issues. Jobs and money are also a good incentive for most people especially those from poor backgrounds. In addition, expensive lifestyles, friends and sometimes love is promised as rewards.

Internet and social media provide major sites for recruitment. The streets too are sites for recruitment where the potential victim is approached by the perpetrator and recruited over time. Other people give consent with or without being aware of what they are getting themselves into. Strangers do not always recruit, in most situations, a person who is well known by the victim does.

People are trafficked usually to be sold for sexual exploitation. Cheap or forced labor also forms a minor but significant reason to buy people. The victims are constantly mistreated and sometimes killed to provide labor and sexual pleasure. Many of these victims end up working in underground brothels, domestic workplaces and other informal workplaces.

Children who are vulnerable to these predators come from families where they are abused. Traffickers are able to exploit their need for love, attention and better treatment in wining them over. However, if spotted early, something can be done to help these children. It is easy to identify changed wardrobe, new electronics or new hobbies that involve time away from home.

Prevention of human trafficking should begin with increasing awareness about this heinous crime. Many people are ignorant of its existence and assume that it does not affect them. More needs to be done to ensure more people are aware of the dangers of trafficking and how to spot a victim and help. This is especially so for schools to and families.

The virtue of self respect and that of others and especially respecting women is important in the society. Legislation should be adequate to remove gangs who trade people and have pedophiles punished. In addition, the sex for money culture should be done away with. Experts advise that you should not try to help victims by yourself, instead contact the relevant authorities.
