State Marriage Records Ohio

By Claire Dowell

A marriage certificate is issued to the couple who finally tied the knot and wishes to have a happy life together. In Ohio, this type of document is open to the public. This means that the residents of the state can easily request for copies of OH Marriage records whenever it is needed.

Doing a research on the family history is one of the top reasons why such document is being requested. Researches would use it as reference in the research since it has information that is needed in the family history files. This document is also needed when processing some transactions in the government. It is required as proof of identification and one's marital status. Some requests cannot be done without presenting a copy of this document. In an unusually yet practical way, some people would use it to verify the marital status of their partners. They do this to make sure that the one's they are dating is unattached. Eventually, it helps the couple avoid problems should they plan to marry after.

A lot of information can be obtained from a marriage certificate. It is considered an invalid document without the complete names of the bride and the groom. The date and the place of marriage are the highlights of the document. The names of the couple's parents as well as the witnesses are also indicated on the file.

It is important that one has an idea of what to do when requesting for a marriage record in Ohio. This can help speed up the process and can avoid delay in the search. The state of Ohio has kept records from 1949. Unfortunately, the files are not available at the office of the Vital Statistics Section in the Department of Health, as opposed to other states. The Ohio Historical Society is where the licenses are archived, however, not all records are available here. One can check with the probate court of the county where the marriage took place and see if they have the document. Fees may not be the same for each county. Some would charge per page as low as $.05 and others may charge per request. It is also important that one has some basic information of the document that is being requested such as the names of the bride and the groom as well as the place and the date of marriage.

Aside from requesting it personally at the office requests can also be done by sending a mail order through the USPS. The mail should be addressed to the county clerk's office where the marriage occurred. It should include all the require documents and information in order for the request to be processed.

We all know that requesting for a copy of marital records may be tedious and it can eat up your time, however this can be avoided when the search is done online. With the Internet as the medium used to gather information, retrieval of this type of document is easier and faster. Access to the files is available 24/7 which makes it even more convenient. Some websites would offer to do the search for a certain fee while others allow their users to search for free.
