The End Of Racism In Sports Media And The Society

By Enid Hinton

The word network is used to refer to the tools that are used to store and deliver news and information to the public. We all interact with the media in one way or another. Racism is the unfair victimization of other people based on their race. Racism in sports media is a problem that is yet to be solved. It is evident in most sports events if not all.

Games and networks seem to share one thing in common, that is, they both emphasize on the concept of fairness. Responsible networks and journalist will forever struggle to tell the whole truth through fair-minded and precise reporting. While in sports, the capacity to succeed is solely determined by individual talent regardless of all the other factors.

When chauvinism infests itself in both the press and games, it takes away the fairness that they both fight for. It denies very talented individuals opportunities of a life time. The discrimination causes them to shy away from sporting activities. It kills their will to do what they love. It destroys their driving force and decreases their productivity.

In the same way, when a journalist decide to publish or air racial comments he influences his readers. He or she creates conditions that are favorable for chauvinism to breed and thrive. He or she is now going against the principles of truth and fairness. The people he influences continue victimizing the players and this becomes a recurring problem.

We first need to emphasize on the brotherhood spirit. We are all one. Our similar features make us belong to one family. Our differences on the other hand just spice up life by adding variety. We may at times feel good about victimizing others. The truth is that we only prove to be worse than those we have discriminated. We victimize people who have no control over where they came from.

First we need to treat others the way we would want to be treated. When a player is not from the same ethnic group as we are it does not mean that he or she should be treated any different. We are all the same. Very tiny differences gives as an illusion to think that we are better. In the real sense, we are worse for victimizing a person who had no control over where he or she came from.

It is only fair that media should protect the rights of the people. There should be no airing of racial comments, posts and written material. They are a mirror of our society. They should show us what is happening and helps us kill the evil in it. Therefore, they should be part of our solutions in the sports industry.

Strong policies and penalties should be set to curb the problem. Spectators should be warned against any kind of discrimination in relation to any participants. Otherwise, they should be punished for such crimes. Penalties should also apply to those who post, publish, or air racial comments. The networks should not be a platform for spreading evil. Penances should be applied to one who goes against these laws.

All in all, everything that happens in society is a result of what people have in mind. Our minds are tools that aid in our daily activities but are also weapons that can destroy others and ourselves. We should be open minded and allow ourselves to think of others as equals. When ethnicity is eliminated in the mind, it will have nowhere else to thrive. Not even in sports.
