Gender Discrimination In Sports Media

By Enid Hinton

Prejudice based on a sexual role is what is commonly referred to as sex discrimination. This discrimination comes from traditional fixes of sex roles, which suggests that one sex is superior to the other. Women hurt frequent discernment in their access to, both unprofessional and professional sport. Gender discrimination in sports media in not only a common problem to sports women, but to sports men also.

Gender ethics and sex are often used interchangeably. But there is a difference. Sex refers to the physical body of a boy or a girl. Though today there are persons who believe they are neither. Gender will refer to the socially defined characteristics that make you a man or a woman. Your body has nothing to do with it.

Discrimination of young men will come about when people start calling them unmanly men. This leads them to withdrawing from participating in any games. The same thing happens to women interested in game or who have talent in the sector. Thus, they are said to have lost their feminity. The unmanly man and non-feminine women are then labeled gay and lesbians respectively without considering their sexual identity. Unfortunately they are just judged by the appearance of their bodies. The judgment of these people is based on what they see. Not what makes you the person you are.

The amount of females in the sporting journalism trade is swiftly budding. This has caused a lot of controversy in recent years. Many traditionalists consider that the sporting business should be predominately for men. They have stomached a lot of criticism for breaking the mold.

These ladies are often given the grounds to feature short sessions before the games begin. Making a report on the ongoing game is a problem since the crowd behind constantly devote their time to make fun on them since they are ladies. Their careers and reputation are judged by how they look.

A debate was in motion as to whether or not to allow lady reporters into the locker rooms after the game. As we all know most of the times they will be denied access granting the male the upper hand. In a case where both sexes are denied access the women tend to be blamed as the cause.

All in all, there are stereotypes associated with each profession. This is a picture we create in our minds while we are small. The job of a man or a woman? No. As we grow we should learn that these stereotypes are wrong and come up with strategies to erase them from our minds. We need to set ourselves free from such kind of victimizing convictions. It hurts other people and you may also get hurt in the process.

Battling with the casts living in minds of people is one of the hardest tasks one could possibly want to do. Even if we want to fight this battle it does not mean that we are guaranteed of victory. As the games journalists we can focus on being better reporters and writers. For in doing our work to the best, we can show the world that our work has nothing to do with our gender.
