Clothing Donation Centers Can Save Money

By Kristen Baird

More and more people are making recycle or reusing a part of their lives and clothing is no exception. Not only does it help the planet but anyone can make a difference in their closet by using a donation center to donate or buy items. Clothing donation is not just for those with money issues but everyone looking to make a difference in their community.

Whether a person lives in Mechanicsburg, PA or in the Pacific, people from all walks of life have needs. Clothing can have a limited shelf life, whether it has to do with wear or keeping a certain status. Parents of growing kids should consider donating clothes since growth spurts often limit wear to childrens apparel, especially when they are very young.

Fashionistas, or those who love to shop for apparel, who are also creative find some incredible pieces that can help expand their wardrobe. One popular find are those who lightly wear career clothing. In some industries, it is common for some people to wear items somewhere between five and ten times before discarding it. Some consider this to be wasteful but this can easily help someone else in need of a work wardrobe.

Donation centers often keep their clients, or customers, in mind when accepting new items. There are many operations that will not accept visibly stained or soiled items. They often do not have the resources for anything other than basic cleaning. Unless it is a high end designer, they sometimes will not accept anything in need of a tailor or extensive cleaning.

People who enjoy crafting often find something new to recreate or refurbish with older or used clothing. Since they are usually skilled at sewing, the possibilities are sometimes endless. Crafters can construct an old item into something for home or a younger member of the household. This is called repurposing and there are even some things people can do without the use of a sewing machine.

These places are also a great way to retire fashion trends. Retro or vintage fabric patterns on older apparel can see new life as a home accessory or other type of functional art. Sometimes they can be used as an applique or decorative patch. Unlike clothing items, some of these can be made without the use of a sewing machine or a lot of cutting.

People who are pack rats should seriously consider donating clothes because it helps to make room for new items. It is common for a person to buy new clothing items while holding on to things that no longer fit or go out of style. Sometimes this behavior reflects someone who wants to hold on to their younger years or remember different times. The best solution is to maybe hold on to a couple of pieces for sentimental value or place these in a separate storage unit.

Places to drop off clothes are growing by leaps and bounds in most major cities. The online world also has many sites and social networking pages that are dedicated to this way of life. Anyone who wants tips will find a myriad of advice and other helpful details that help make the most of their money and time. Many operations will allow people to write off their items when it comes time to file taxes.
